Commanding your attention with her intricate storytelling and tender vocal delivery is Brisbane’s Brooke Austen. Her soulful, vocal-led songs weave the sounds of the city in with the feel of a small town, but always leaves you with a warm feeling of home. Compared to artists such as Yebba, Sara Bareilles and Adele, she’ll draw you in and completely captivate you with what she has to say.
Writing to understand the world around her, the singer-songwriter already has a slew of strong tracks in her catalogue, and will bring five to the forefront with the release of her debut EP ‘passage’ in May 2024. Her first release of the EP, ‘Home,’ has set the scene for the strong body of work, and received glowing praise from many directions, with Declan Byrne from Triple J (previously Home and Hosed) highlighting her “truthful writing” and “believable and endearing” emotion. Brooke’s most recent single, ‘Across the Room’ is described as a “beautiful melting pot of influences, inspirations and sounds [with] jazzy undertones” (Anika Luna, Triple J).
No stranger to the live performance setting, Brooke sold out her ‘Across the Room’ single launch in September 2023 at The Junk Bar in Brisbane. Her captivating vocal skill has seen her support renowned Brisbane songstress Sahara Beck on her 2024 national album tour, as well as perform live on ABC Radio, and play main stage at Ipswich Festival in 2019. Brooke graduated from a Diploma of Music Industry (Sound Production) in 2021, with many artists in the Brisbane and South East Queensland region becoming familiar with Brooke’s warm nature and audio skill. Her on-the-ground experience as a Backline Technician and Audio Engineer has seen her develop a greater understanding and holistic vision of the creation and sharing of music, with positive flow-on effects transpiring in her own project.
Enamoured by the way music can tell a story, Brooke has also composed original scores and soundtracks for “Key Insights to Nearby Galaxies” and “Opportunity”, new plays presented at Anywhere Festival (2018) and Short & Sweet (2019) respectively.
Demonstrated by her multi-faceted and deep-rooted involvement in music, and evident in her intricate catalogue and admirable live performance technique, Brooke loves the way music can express a feeling that words alone struggle to capture. That is, in essence, the driving force behind her craft.
